A Little Backstory
In 1995, a teenage kid was obsessed with building homemade hydroponic systems to grow all kinds of things, starting with a vertical strawberry farm: a hybrid drip/ebb-and-flow system that grew the biggest, juiciest strawberries. He loved the idea of hydro: the efficiency, cost savings, science, and quality.
In 1995, he smoked his first rip of cannabis from an old metal pipe with a high school friend. They laughed for what seemed like hours sitting on that curb down the street from his friend’s house. After smoking, he noticed he had no need for his inhaler, something he relied on regularly. Remember Sam from The Goonies? Kind of like that. He smoked weekly after that for two years, and his asthma symptoms seemed to ease over time. Later, he would learn that cannabis could be helpful for some asthmatics, and that pushed him into medical cannabis.
First Gardens and First Crosses
By 1996, he had built his first indoor grow. A good friend and mentor gave him Northern Lights #5, #7, and #11. These were the first plants he grew in his custom-made NFT (nutrient film technique) hydro system, powered by two homemade air-cooled reflectors and a couple of 400w magnetic ballasts.
Back then, there was limited information on how to grow, and nobody could know about your favorite pastime. It wasn’t like it is today. He relied on his mentor to get him started and used his knowledge of hydro to practice.
By 1997, he had a little outdoor grow going, too: plants attached to a pulley system that would be raised into the pine trees of his backyard. His mentor gave him cuts of Big Bud, Skunk #1, Jack Herer, and Hawgs Breath. His first outdoor was riddled with botrytis and caterpillars, and it was a great learning experience.
In 1998, he took a trip to Jamaica and brought back seeds from herb purchased from a local dealer. With these seeds, he made his first crosses: Jamaican outcrossed to itself and to everything he had going in the backyard.
The Capulator Name
He received his medicinal paperwork from the state and the county. The Capulator nickname was given to him around this time by a close friend named “G.” This good friend was also his plug. Apparently, the “Capulator” moniker was bestowed because Cap always paid his dues, but Cap just chalked it up to a stoney nickname. The only person who called him “Capulator” was G. Nobody else knew that nickname.
Capulator loved the plant. He always had a small home grow. In 2001, he traveled to Canada and purchased Bubblegum seeds directly from Marc Emery. In the early 2000s, he drove to Aspen to pick up legendary cuts of Blockhead, AK47, and Blueberry. In 2008, he was growing Jew Gold, Super Lemon Haze, White Widow, Cannadential, Destroyer, OG18, and Sour Diesel. By 2010/2011, he had found online forums: a place to share information with like-minded people. Nearly 15 years after planting his first garden, he decided his online name would be Capulator.
The Forum Era
He spent the next few years absorbing knowledge, sharing knowledge, and making friends. Seed Junky, Jungleboys, Swampboy Seeds, Alien, Obsoul33t, JAWS, Exotic, CSI, Archive, and so many more amazing seed makers and growers came from that era. Capulator earned his reputation among his peers by showing off his talents and helping others succeed. With this reputation came access to coveted genetics like WiFi 43, True OG, GSC, Gorilla Glue, and many more.
The MAC
In 2015, he finally released some seeds: the MAC. Although Cap had earned his street cred as a grower over many years, the MAC put him on the map as a seed maker. He put the MAC seeds up for auction to help a forum buddy who had been arrested. The final bid on that pack of seeds was $15k. He was encouraged to sell more seeds, but he mainly used his seeds to fundraise for others.
Why Capulator Seeds Are Different
The brand “Capulator” simply happened organically over time. By following his passion for the plant, he was able to succeed. His love for making new crosses and his high standards of quality set him apart from many other fly-by-night “breeders” who are only in it for the money.
When you get a seed from Cap, you have an excellent chance of finding something nice, because he has already grown those seeds in his own garden to make sure they will be stable, beautiful specimens. He isn’t just crossing hype cuts and selling untested gear. He is doing the work to ensure that you have a good experience, because his brand is his name.
Thirty years of growing gives him the experience, which he likes to pay forward to help you succeed as a grower. If he isn’t in his own garden, he is in someone else’s grow, helping them succeed. He has never done it for the money. It’s always been a labor of love.
As an old forum buddy, Texas Kid, would say: “Passion, baby!”
